Cyclone Arnab killed three people and damaged at least 31 houses after making landfall on India’s Andhra Pradesh coast on Wednesday, according to a National Disaster Response Force officer cited by PTI.
The India Meteorological Department said the very severe cyclonic storm crossed the Andhra Pradesh-Yanam coast between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m., with sustained winds of 125-135 kph. It subsequently weakened into a severe cyclonic storm and was expected to move north-northwest and gradually weaken further.
Heavy rain and strong winds uprooted trees and electricity poles and damaged buildings in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. Some coastal areas recorded more than 200 millimetres of rain, Scroll.in reported, citing the Hindustan Times.
More than 84,000 people were moved into 290 shelters in Andhra Pradesh, while Odisha evacuated tens of thousands from low-lying and landslide-prone areas. More than 100,000 people were evacuated across the two states. Andhra Pradesh authorities activated 609 school campuses as relief shelters and closed schools in 16 coastal districts. Rescue and disaster-response teams were deployed across affected and threatened areas.
The storm also disrupted transport. At least 64 trains were cancelled, while airlines warned that flights serving Rajahmundry, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam would be affected. Odisha closed schools and Anganwadi centres in 16 districts as authorities prepared for heavy rain and damaging winds.
