President Donald Trump campaigned in Corinth, Mississippi, on Monday for Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, whose reelection race against Democrat Scott Colom has become unexpectedly competitive ahead of the midterm elections.
“I'm here because Cindy's doing great, but I just got to make sure. I can't take a chance,” Trump told the crowd. He attacked Colom from the stage as a “Marxist radical” and a “shameless phony who pretends to be a moderate.” Colom also visited the rally site and said he wanted to hear the concerns of Trump supporters.
Reuters reported that Trump dismissed unfavorable polling and predicted that the economy would help Republicans. Voter dissatisfaction over inflation, the war in Iran and other elements of Trump’s second term has allowed Democratic candidates to compete in races in traditionally Republican states, according to NPR.
The Mississippi appearance began a week of campaigning scheduled to include Texas, South Carolina and Iowa. Officials also announced that Trump would hold a Saturday rally in Salina, Kansas, his second trip to that state in less than two weeks. In Kansas, Republican Sen. Roger Marshall is facing a more competitive reelection campaign as health-care costs and coverage disruptions become campaign issues.
Democratic candidates and surrogates were also campaigning nationwide as the party seeks control of Congress and gains in state races. More than 30 million ballots have already been cast, according to data collected by The Associated Press from election administrators.
