Harry Kane won the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or on Monday, becoming the first English player to receive the award since Michael Owen in 2001.

The 33-year-old Bayern Munich and England captain finished ahead of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona attacker Lamine Yamal in voting announced at a ceremony in London. Kane also received the Gerd Müller Trophy as the season’s leading striker.

Kane scored 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country during the 2025-26 season, including 61 in 51 matches for Bayern — a club record for a single campaign. His 36 Bundesliga goals helped Bayern win the league, while he scored 10 times in the DFB-Pokal, including a hat-trick against Stuttgart in the final, as the club completed a domestic double. Bayern also reached the Champions League semi-finals.

For England, Kane scored six goals at the World Cup as the team reached the semi-finals and then defeated France to finish third. The goals took him past Gary Lineker as England’s leading scorer at World Cup finals.

“My journey wasn’t straightforward,” Kane said while reflecting on his early career. “I had to fight my way to be the very best right now.” He thanked his teammates, coaches and family, and described winning the award in London as especially meaningful.

Former Ballon d’Or winner Lothar Matthäus said Wednesday that the award could help persuade Kane, who is in contract talks with Bayern, to extend his stay at the German club.
