Fleetwood Town eliminated Premier League champion Arsenal from the English League Cup on Tuesday, winning a fourth-round penalty shootout 5-3 after the match finished 1-1.
Aaron Loupalo-Bi, on loan from Fulham, gave the League Two side a 21st-minute lead at Fleetwood’s Highbury Stadium. Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard came on at halftime, and Viktor Gyokeres equalized in the 50th minute. Arsenal finished with 10 players after 16-year-old Max Dowman was sent off in the 85th minute for kicking out at an opponent.
Fleetwood converted all five of their penalties. Goalkeeper Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimaraes’s attempt, the shootout’s only miss, before Northern Ireland Under-21 international Conor Haughey scored the decisive kick. Home supporters then streamed onto the field to celebrate Fleetwood’s first appearance in the competition’s quarter-finals.
Fleetwood entered the match 18th in England’s fourth tier and 84 places below Arsenal in the league pyramid. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta made nine changes to his lineup but still selected several experienced internationals.
“A really sad day for us,” Arteta said, while adding that he could not fault his players’ effort or determination. Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor called it “the biggest night in the club’s history” and said his team succeeded by denying Arsenal space and attacking opportunities.
