Senior officials from Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan held talks in Tehran on Monday aimed at easing regional tensions and supporting diplomatic efforts to resolve the continuing conflict.
The delegations included Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman, Pakistani army chief Gen. Asim Munir and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin. They met Iranian officials led by Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei.
Saudi Deputy Minister for Public Diplomacy Rayed Krimly said the visit was part of efforts by countries in the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement to promote de-escalation and diplomatic solutions. He said the group also supported mediation by Qatar and Pakistan.
Following the meeting, Rezaei said the four countries agreed that security in West Asia should be based on cooperation among regional states and that outside interference should be prevented. According to Rezaei, the talks addressed regional security, Israeli activity and developments in Palestine and Lebanon, and created what he described as a “new, positive atmosphere.”
The meeting took place amid fears of renewed US and Israeli attacks on Iran after months of conflict. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said earlier Monday that the discussions could be the beginning of a regional security framework rooted in cooperation among countries in the region.
