Israel will close all land crossings into and out of the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, Oct. 27, during its general election, the military said, as Israeli forces continued a large operation in Hebron following a deadly checkpoint attack.
The army also barred Palestinian workers from entering Israeli communities and industrial zones across much of the West Bank and Jordan Valley on Sunday and Monday. The restrictions follow Friday’s attack near Hebron, in which two Palestinian gunmen killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded three others. The attackers were also killed. Hamas praised the attack but did not claim responsibility.
Israeli forces subsequently placed Hebron under lockdown and displaced about 2,000 residents. Defence Minister Israel Katz said they would not be allowed to return until the military had finished addressing what he called Hamas-related activity in the city. The army said it operated in 40 locations across the West Bank on Friday and Saturday and detained about 40 suspects, including people it identified as affiliated with Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
Al Jazeera reported that forces demolished a three-storey building and industrial facilities in Hebron’s Farsh Al-Hawa area. Palestinian authorities in the city declared a state of emergency and organized temporary housing, including privately offered apartments, for displaced families.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would impose a heavy price for the checkpoint attack and described the planned operation as the largest of its kind in the West Bank since 1967. The Palestinian Authority called for international pressure to protect residents affected by the operation.
