Early voting accelerates as states weigh voter ID rules

Early voting is underway ahead of November’s elections, with several Texas news outlets reporting unusually high participation. KERA said voting records were being broken across the state, while The Texan reported that Texas was on track for record midterm turnout and that Democrats led the early vote. Dallas News and Click2Houston also reported regional differences in turnout, including a changed early-voter profile in Harris County. Early-voting totals, however, do not necessarily predict final election results.

Voters in six states — Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, North Carolina and Ohio — will also decide measures that would impose or expand voter identification requirements, according to the Washington Examiner. The proposals vary, with some creating new rules and others placing existing statutory requirements into state constitutions. Some measures would require mail voters to provide part of a driver’s license or Social Security number.

Registration remains open through Election Day in 22 states and Washington, D.C. Laura W. Brill wrote in The Guardian. She estimated that 1.7 million 18-year-olds live in those jurisdictions and said voter records indicate nearly half are not yet registered. Massachusetts, Nebraska, New York and North Carolina permit some provisional voting during early voting for eligible people who missed advance registration deadlines, but not on Election Day.
