John Anderson, the country singer known for his distinctive voice and hits including “Swingin’,” “Straight Tequila Night” and “Seminole Wind,” has died at 71, his family announced Wednesday.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and best friend,” his family said on Instagram. “To the world, he was a gifted country music singer whose voice and songs touched countless lives.”
Born and raised in Florida, Anderson moved to Nashville after high school. He played clubs at night while working construction and other manual-labor jobs during the day, including roofing work on the Grand Ole Opry. He released his debut single in 1975 and later built a career spanning nearly five decades and 22 studio albums.
Anderson had five No. 1 country hits. “Swingin’” topped the country chart and was named the Country Music Association’s Single of the Year in 1983. His 1992 album “Seminole Wind” revived his commercial career and included the enduring songs “Straight Tequila Night” and its title track. His final studio album, “Years,” was released in 2020.
After suffering a serious illness beginning in 2016 that caused severe headaches, hair loss and near-total hearing loss, Anderson returned to recording. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024.
Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani and Tim McGraw were among those who paid tribute. McGraw said he had spoken, laughed and sung with Anderson at a Hall of Fame ceremony in Nashville just days before his death.
