Trump attacks El-Sayed while campaigning for Rogers in Michigan

President Donald Trump attacked Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s Muslim identity during a Sunday campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, while urging voters to support Republican nominee Mike Rogers in the November 3 midterm election.

Trump repeatedly made unfounded claims about El-Sayed, calling him a “jihadist” and alleging that he wanted to impose Islamic law in the United States. He also said El-Sayed should be required to pass through a metal detector before entering the Senate and suggested Christmas would be canceled if the Democrat won. Some rally attendees shouted “traitor” when El-Sayed’s name was mentioned.

El-Sayed is a U.S.-born physician and former public health official. There is no evidence that he belongs to the Muslim Brotherhood or another foreign organization, as Trump alleged. His campaign has emphasized removing money from politics, lowering costs and establishing Medicare for All.

Rogers and El-Sayed are competing for the open seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters. Rogers said in an NBC News interview that he was attracting coalitions of Democratic voters who could not support El-Sayed. Trump also defended the Iran war during the nearly two-hour rally and urged supporters to act as though he were on the ballot.

The rally came during the final full week of campaigning, with early voting underway in 43 states. A CBS News poll found that most Americans disapproved of Trump’s handling of the economy and inflation.
