Michael Carrick is expected to remain in charge of Manchester United for Saturday’s Premier League match at Chelsea despite mounting pressure following a 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth.

Carrick led training at the club’s Carrington complex on Tuesday after chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox held talks about the managerial situation. According to reports cited by RTÉ and Al Jazeera, Carrick and his squad will be given an opportunity to respond at Stamford Bridge.

The Bournemouth loss extended United’s winless run to eight matches in all competitions and left the club 16th in the Premier League, one point above the relegation zone. It followed a 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como. United have won two of their first 12 matches this season.

Bournemouth won at Old Trafford through goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson. Carrick left captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench throughout the match, describing the decision as based “purely” on football considerations.

Supporters applauded Carrick and sang his name after Sunday’s defeat, while directing anger toward the players and the club’s owners. Carrick said after the match that he understood the uncertainty surrounding his position and would continue working as normal. The Irish Times reported that his future beyond the Chelsea game could depend on United’s performance and result.
