Parties representing Israel’s Arab citizens emerged as potential kingmakers after Tuesday’s election left neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s allies nor the opposition with a majority in the 120-seat Knesset.
Projections varied as absentee ballots were counted. RTÉ reported estimates of 53 seats for Netanyahu’s bloc, 48 for opposition parties and 19 for Arab-led parties, while other reports projected 17 to 18 seats for the Joint List and Ra’am combined. A governing coalition requires 61 seats.
Opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot has said he is open to working with Arab-led parties. Ra’am leader Mansour Abbas, whose party participated in a coalition formed in 2021, has indicated willingness to join an Eisenkot-led government. Joint List leader Yousef Jabareen told Reuters his party wanted to help remove Netanyahu but could not join an Eisenkot government because of its positions on Gaza and southern Lebanon; he left open supporting a minority government from outside the coalition.
Joint List co-leader Ayman Odeh called for a “genuine and equal Jewish-Arab partnership.” Small rallies in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem also backed a coalition including Arab-led parties.
Netanyahu’s Likud accused Arab parties of stealing the election without providing specific evidence. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for Arab party leaders to be arrested over unproven allegations of Qatari funding. The election committee said reported irregularities were few. Netanyahu remains prime minister in a caretaker capacity while final results and coalition negotiations proceed.
