Fuel costs halt MV Odyssey’s global voyage in Cambodia

The MV Odyssey has suspended its multiyear around-the-world voyage in Cambodia after its operator said surging fuel costs made the trip financially unsustainable, forcing 203 passengers to leave the ship.
The vessel, operated by Florida-based Villa Vie Residences, arrived in Sihanoukville on Friday. The company said monthly fuel expenses per cabin, historically about $1,800, had risen to an estimated $6,000 to $8,000 in parts of Asia. Attempts to conserve fuel by sailing more slowly and remaining longer in port did not offset the increase, it said.
Villa Vie said it could no longer absorb the operating losses and that charging residents the full additional cost was not realistic. Fuel prices have risen amid curtailed traffic through the Strait of Hormuz during the United States-Israel war with Iran, according to Al Jazeera.
Cambodian officials said 203 passengers, most of them Americans, and 156 crew members were aboard. Passengers reported receiving only about seven to eight hours’ notice to disembark and having to arrange accommodations. Some had purchased cabins intending to live aboard for years.
The ship departed Belfast in October 2024 for a voyage planned to last three and a half years. Cambodian officials said it was expected to refuel and leave Sihanoukville on Saturday, but Villa Vie had not publicly confirmed a departure date or announced how residents’ voyage would continue.
