North Korea fired about a dozen short-range ballistic missiles toward the sea off its east coast on Thursday, South Korea’s military said, as tensions continued along the inter-Korean border.
The missiles were launched from the Wonsan area at about 12:30 p.m. and flew roughly 250 kilometers, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. A South Korean military official said the launch was believed to have involved KN-25 600-millimeter multiple rocket launchers, though analysis of the weapons and other launch details remained under way in coordination with the United States.
Japan’s Defense Ministry said the projectiles did not appear to have landed within Japan’s exclusive economic zone. South Korea said it had increased surveillance, was prepared for possible additional launches and was sharing information with the United States and Japan.
South Korea’s presidential National Security Office convened an emergency meeting and urged Pyongyang to stop its missile launches, calling them violations of U.N. Security Council resolutions.
The launch followed South Korea’s proposal about a week earlier for military talks over border demarcation issues. Tensions have risen since mine explosions in the Demilitarized Zone on Sept. 21 wounded three South Korean soldiers. Seoul has said North Korean forces planted the mines, while Pyongyang has denied responsibility and accused South Korea of fabricating the incident. North Korea has also threatened to deploy weapons and resume anti-South propaganda broadcasts along the border.
