Former President Barack Obama campaigned for Democratic candidates in Ohio and Michigan on Saturday, criticizing President Donald Trump and Republican allies as the Nov. 3 midterm elections approached.

At a Cleveland rally, Obama described the Trump administration as defined by “chaos and cruelty and corruption and incompetence” and blamed its decisions for rising living costs. He also mocked Trump’s White House renovations and argued that the president had failed to fulfill promises on grocery prices and foreign conflicts.

Obama appeared with Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton and former Sen. Sherrod Brown, who is challenging Republican Sen. Jon Husted. He condemned a campaign advertisement from Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy featuring Acton’s estranged birth mother, who calls Acton a liar and questions her mental health. Obama said public officials should meet a basic standard of decency. Ramaswamy and Trump have defended the advertisement, while Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and other state Republicans have called for its removal.

Later in Detroit, Obama backed Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and campaigned alongside Democrats including Jocelyn Benson. He criticized Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods, sarcastically calling Canada a “well-known evil empire,” and promoted cooperation between El-Sayed and Democratic Sen. Elissa Slotkin.

Obama urged supporters in both states to vote early. Trump campaigned for Republican candidates in Georgia on the same day as both parties sought control of Congress.
