Rescuers continued searching wrecked train carriages in Spain’s central Toledo province on Thursday after a high-speed rail collision killed at least 69 people and injured more than 100.
Cranes worked overnight to lift sections of the wreckage from Wednesday’s crash, while emergency crews focused on an overturned carriage. Castilla-La Mancha regional leader Emiliano García-Page said human remains had been found during the operation and cautioned that authorities could not yet rule out additional fatalities. Officials said 57 injured people remained in hospital.
Spain’s Interior Ministry deployed more than 800 military and police personnel, over 200 vehicles, three helicopters, drones, mounted units and search dogs. A Toledo judge established a two-kilometre exclusion zone in both directions along the Madrid-Seville high-speed line while investigators began examining the crash.
According to Transport Minister Óscar Puente, several trains had stopped because of a signal failure before a state-run Renfe train was authorised to continue at normal speed despite an Iryo-operated train being stationary ahead. The government has called that authorisation “inexplicable.”
Spain declared three days of national mourning. The leaders of the country’s two main political parties suspended campaign events ahead of the November 29 snap election. Train drivers also proceeded with a previously planned strike seeking greater investment in railway safety. The Foreign Ministry said 42 foreign citizens from seven countries were involved in the crash; one was killed and at least seven were injured.
