Alvin K. Hellerstein, the veteran federal judge who oversaw major cases involving the September 11 attacks, President Donald Trump and former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, died Wednesday at 92, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York confirmed.
Hellerstein was presiding over the federal criminal case against Maduro at the time of his death. Maduro faces drug-trafficking-related charges in New York. Colombia One reported that U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres will take over the case.
President Bill Clinton nominated Hellerstein to the federal bench, and the Senate confirmed him in 1998. During nearly three decades as a judge, he handled extensive civil litigation arising from the September 11, 2001, attacks. He rejected an initial settlement covering thousands of claims related to post-attack illnesses, finding its terms unfair, before approving a revised agreement.
Hellerstein also repeatedly denied Trump’s attempts to move his New York falsified-business-records case from state to federal court, including an effort based on presidential immunity. His docket included litigation related to abuse at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison and other prominent financial and criminal cases.
Barry Pollack, an attorney for Maduro, told CBS News that the defense team was saddened by Hellerstein’s death and offered condolences to his family.
