Mexico’s opposition National Action Party has named six “state coordinators” who are expected to become its candidates in gubernatorial elections scheduled for June 6, 2027.
The party unveiled its Querétaro selection on Sunday, naming Querétaro city Mayor Felipe Fernando Macías Olvera, a former federal deputy. PAN currently governs Querétaro under Gov. Mauricio Kuri.
Other coordinators announced by the party include federal deputy Francisco Pelayo Covarrubias in Baja California Sur; former Chihuahua city Mayor Marco Antonio Bonilla Mendoza in Chihuahua; Morelia Mayor Alfonso Martínez Alcázar in Michoacán; and Tlaxcala state legislator Miriam Martínez Sánchez in Tlaxcala.
PAN formally calls the appointees “state coordinators for the defense of the homeland, the family and freedom,” but they are expected to be designated later as gubernatorial candidates.
Governors will be elected in 17 of Mexico’s 31 states next year. Voters will also choose 500 federal deputies and thousands of state and municipal officials. PAN, Mexico’s main opposition party, currently governs four of the country’s 32 federal entities, including Aguascalientes, Chihuahua and Querétaro, which are among the states holding gubernatorial contests in 2027.
