Flávio Bolsonaro claims leadership of Brazil after election defeat

Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro declared himself the country’s rightful leader after arriving in the United States following his defeat by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Sunday’s presidential runoff.

In an open letter posted on X, Bolsonaro initially called himself “the elected president” and alleged that electoral fraud and a coup involving Lula and Brazil’s Supreme Court had deprived him of victory. He later deleted the post and published a revised version describing himself instead as the “leader” of Brazil. He said he would lead the opposition from the United States.

Bolsonaro offered no evidence of fraud. Lula won by about 4.4 million votes, and the result has been recognized by Brazil’s electoral authorities, international observers and Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party. Rogério Marinho, the party’s Senate leader, expressed solidarity with Bolsonaro but said there was no evidence supporting his allegations. Brazil’s electoral authority said the vote complied with legal and constitutional requirements.

Bolsonaro traveled with his wife and daughters through Argentina and Ecuador before landing near Miami on Wednesday. He had left Brazil after failing to comply with a Supreme Court order to surrender his passports in connection with a money-laundering investigation. He denies wrongdoing and has not been charged in that inquiry.

Bolsonaro thanked Argentine President Javier Milei and U.S. President Donald Trump for their assistance and welcome. Trump again called the Brazilian election “very strange” but said he would not become involved in Bolsonaro’s claim.
