US Vice President JD Vance contacted Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei as Washington and Tehran explored a possible return to negotiations, according to reports Wednesday and Thursday.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Vance sent Rezaei, the head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, a letter at President Donald Trump’s direction. The letter and subsequent contacts between US and Iranian officials reportedly focused on a framework for negotiations rather than the terms of a peace proposal. Axios reported that Vance told Rezaei any negotiations must address Iran’s nuclear program.
Trump disputed that he had directed Vance to restart peace talks, describing the contact as humanitarian outreach. He told reporters that Iran needed medical supplies and that he had approved Vance’s proposal to help deliver assistance.
Iran has received the letter but has not responded, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported Thursday. Tasnim said Tehran continued to insist that the United States meet its seven conditions and considered positions outside that framework unacceptable.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi separately said Tehran remained in close contact with intermediaries over ideas for implementing Iran’s seven-day plan to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt and Turkey have been involved in mediation efforts, according to The National.
The outreach comes amid concerns about renewed US military action against Iran following months of conflict and disruption to shipping and energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
