Karnataka’s Cabinet approved an ₹8-per-litre increase in the price of Nandini milk from November 1, raising the expected retail price from ₹46 to ₹54 per litre. Prices of other dairy products are also set to rise.
The government said ₹7 of the increase would go to dairy farmers and ₹1 to the Karnataka Milk Federation and its milk unions. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said farmers, unions and legislators had repeatedly sought an increase because of rising production costs and drought-related distress.
Farmers’ procurement payment will rise from ₹35 to ₹42 per litre, while an existing ₹5 government incentive will continue, taking their total payment to ₹47, Gowda said. He added that daily milk procurement in Karnataka had fallen by nearly 10 lakh litres amid the drought. Farmers and unions had initially requested a ₹10 increase.
The Cabinet delayed its decision while the election code of conduct was in force for Legislative Council polls, whose results were declared October 27. The previous increase was ₹4 per litre in 2025.
The higher milk price is also expected to affect prepared drinks and desserts. Condiment-store operators have decided to raise tea and coffee prices by ₹5 per cup, according to The Hindu, while hotel associations said prices for tea, coffee and some milk-based desserts would increase. The Karnataka Bakeries, Sweets and Cafe Association said its members would not raise bakery or sweet prices for now.
