Dolores Huerta, the labor organizer and civil rights activist who co-founded the organization that became the United Farm Workers, died Wednesday at her home in Bakersfield, California. She was 96. Her family announced her death in a statement published by the Dolores Huerta Foundation; Colombia One reported that the cause was cancer.

Born in Dawson, New Mexico, in 1930 and raised in Stockton, California, Huerta worked as a teacher before turning to community organizing. She and Cesar Chavez established the National Farm Workers Association in 1962. After joining Filipino farmworkers in the 1965 Delano grape strike, the organization merged with a Filipino-led group and became a predecessor of the UFW.

Huerta helped organize a nationwide boycott of California table grapes and negotiated contracts that improved farmworkers’ wages, benefits and working conditions. She also advocated for California’s 1975 Agricultural Labor Relations Act, which created a framework for agricultural workers to organize and bargain collectively. Her work later included immigrant rights, women’s political participation and protections for low-income families.

Huerta popularized the rallying cry “Sí, se puede.” Following her death, lawmakers, activists and union leaders paid tribute, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former Vice President Kamala Harris and California Gov. Gavin Newsom. UFW President Teresa Romero said Huerta “fought for farm workers to the very end of her life” and called continued organizing the greatest tribute to her. Newsom ordered flags at the California Capitol and state buildings lowered to half-staff in her honor.
