A 36-year-old British woman died after trying to rescue her two sons when they were swept away while snorkelling near North Bimini in the Bahamas, police said.
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s preliminary account, the woman was snorkelling with her husband and sons near the island’s southern point on Tuesday when a strong current reportedly carried both boys away. She entered the water in an attempt to save them and was also swept away.
The children were later rescued. The woman was recovered and taken to the North Bimini ferry dock, where CPR was reportedly administered, before being transported to a local clinic. A doctor pronounced her dead despite efforts to save her life.
Police opened an investigation into the death and said foul play was not suspected. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The BBC reported that the woman was believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire. Britain’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said it was in contact with Bahamian authorities and was providing support to her family.
