Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal on Monday defended party president Mallikarjun Kharge’s remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying it was directed at the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh rather than at Modi personally.
Venugopal said he understood Kharge to mean that the RSS was the ideological “parent” of Bharatiya Janata Party leaders. He also referred to what he described as a “purification exercise” conducted after Kharge, who comes from a marginalised background, attended a program. Venugopal said the episode illustrated the ideology Kharge was criticizing.
Speaking about preparations for Punjab’s 2027 Assembly election, Venugopal said Congress would begin its campaign on November 4 with a rally attended by Rahul Gandhi. He said Gandhi had a strong connection with people in Punjab, particularly young voters.
Venugopal also accused the Aam Aadmi Party government of failing to maintain law and order in the state and claimed Punjab had been more peaceful under Congress rule. He has been meeting District Congress Committee presidents and other state party leaders as part of the election preparations.
