The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi won three of five graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies in Maharashtra’s Legislative Council elections, while the ruling Mahayuti secured two.

Congress retained the Nagpur Graduates’ seat, where Abhijeet Wanjari defeated BJP candidate Sudhakar Kohale by 3,271 votes after more than 40 hours of counting. Wanjari received 67,231 votes to Kohale’s 63,960, giving Congress a second consecutive victory in a constituency the BJP had held for 58 years before losing it in 2020.

Sharad Pawar’s NCP (SP) won both seats it contested, with Harshada Deshmukh defeating the BJP’s Smita Jadhav in Pune Graduates’ and the party also taking Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Graduates’. The BJP won Pune Teachers’, while the Shiv Sena won Amravati Teachers’.

The outcome prompted recriminations within Mahayuti. BJP spokesperson Navnath Ban accused Shiv Sena figures of working against alliance candidates in Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and urged Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to take disciplinary action.

Shiv Sena spokesperson Anand Paranjape rejected the allegations, saying the BJP had caused dissatisfaction among its own workers by choosing an “outsider” for Pune Graduates’. He said all three Mahayuti parties should examine the result and that the BJP must consult its allies more effectively.

BJP vice-president Keshav Upadhye said the party needed to assess where it went wrong. Party figures cited candidate selection, internal dissent and an independent candidate’s role among possible factors in the Nagpur and Pune defeats.
