France deployed about 70,000 police and gendarmes on Saturday as nationwide protests over education conditions, living costs and public services resumed a week after widespread rioting and looting.

Tens of thousands marched peacefully in Paris, while scattered confrontations were reported in several other cities. Police used tear gas in Clermont-Ferrand, Grenoble, Lille and Nice, where a water cannon was also deployed. Hooded youths clashed with officers in Marseille and Lyon. The Express Tribune reported that the unrest was markedly less severe than the previous weekend.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said police had been instructed to respond quickly to violence and looting. Fox News reported that Nunez announced nearly 1,000 arrests nationwide by later Saturday. Earlier in the day, he said pre-emptive searches had uncovered fireworks, ball bearings and other objects that could be used as weapons.

The Interior Ministry estimated nationwide turnout at about 410,000, while unions put it at 800,000. In Paris, police estimated 110,000 participants, compared with a union estimate of 250,000.

Authorities imposed protest restrictions in several cities and deployed helicopters, armoured vehicles, water cannons and other equipment. More than 20 Paris metro stations closed, along with major cultural sites including the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay, while retailers boarded up storefronts after thousands of businesses were damaged or looted the previous weekend.
