Attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz reached their highest monthly level since the war began in late February, with 27 incidents recorded in October, according to International Maritime Organization data cited by USNI News. USNI News reported that Iran was responsible for most of the attacks.
Iran said seven oil tankers had been damaged in the strait, while its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy said Friday that it had halted two tankers attempting to use an unauthorized route. The IRGC said the vessels had disabled navigation and positioning systems and ignored repeated radio warnings. It accused the U.S. military of supporting their attempted passage.
Oman said its navy rescued 25 crew members from the Panamanian-flagged merchant ship Riti after it was targeted and caught fire near the strait. The sailors received medical care. MarineTraffic identified the vessel as a crude oil tanker. An earlier United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations notice placed a burning outbound vessel about 25 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman, but did not identify the cause.
The IRGC also said a vessel that caught fire Thursday night later sank. In a separate account, it said three oil tankers had been halted after unspecified incidents or mine strikes.
U.S. Central Command chief Brad Cooper said U.S. forces had cleared Iranian sea mines from the strait’s internationally recognized main transit routes.
