North Korea fired around 10 short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area toward the sea off its east coast on Thursday, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. The missiles were launched at about 12:30 p.m. and flew roughly 250 kilometers.
Japan’s Defence Ministry said the projectiles did not appear to have landed within Japan’s exclusive economic zone. South Korea said it strengthened surveillance, maintained readiness for further launches and shared information with the United States and Japan. Its presidential National Security Office convened an emergency meeting and called the launches a serious violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions.
North Korean state media reported Friday that leader Kim Jong Un attended an exhibition and weapons demonstration on Thursday featuring tactical suicide drones, multipurpose drones, cruise missiles and a battalion of 600-millimeter multiple rocket launchers. KCNA said the launcher, called “Sniper,” fired publicly for the first time and claimed the weapons successfully struck their targets.
Kim called for North Korea to secure “absolute superiority” in drone technology and prioritize artificial intelligence in unmanned weapons systems, according to KCNA. State-media photographs showed more than 10 large rocket launchers firing simultaneously and drones attacking mock targets. KCNA did not identify the demonstration’s location, while Yonhap reported that visible structures suggested it was held at Wonsan-Kalma Airport.
