Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has confirmed Bruno Fernandes will remain club captain after talks between the pair following the midfielder’s public criticism of the team’s tactics.
Fernandes questioned United’s passive approach after a 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como, saying the team needed to be braver in pressing high and making opponents uncomfortable. Carrick subsequently left him on the bench for Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth, but said Thursday that the decision was based solely on what he believed was right for that match.
“Bruno is fully committed to this football club and there are absolutely no issues,” Carrick said before Saturday’s Premier League game at Chelsea. He described Fernandes as an important player who had led the team well for years and “will continue to do that.”
Carrick also said he did not need assurances about his own position despite United’s eight-match winless run in all competitions. The Bournemouth defeat left the club 16th in the Premier League, one point above the relegation zone. Senior officials held talks Monday amid speculation over Carrick’s future, but he has remained in charge.
“I understand the job, I understand the responsibilities, I understand what comes with that,” Carrick said. “I really don’t need any assurances from anyone in that regard.”
