Cyclone Arnab killed seven people in Andhra Pradesh and caused an estimated ₹4,600 crore in damage after striking the state’s coast as a very severe cyclonic storm, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said Thursday.
The cyclone crossed the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts on Wednesday during a six-hour landfall, with sustained winds of 125-135 kmph and gusts reaching 150 kmph, according to the India Meteorological Department. By Thursday morning, it had weakened into a depression over southern Chhattisgarh and adjoining Odisha and was expected to weaken further.
Officials said the deaths resulted from falling trees, electrocution, wall collapses and other cyclone-related incidents. More than 180,000 people were evacuated in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Heavy rain exceeded 200 mm in some coastal areas, while strong winds uprooted trees and power infrastructure. Naidu said at least 8,000 electricity poles were downed in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district alone.
Flights were disrupted or suspended at three Andhra Pradesh airports, and at least 64 trains were cancelled. Andhra Pradesh converted hundreds of schools into relief shelters and mobilised disaster-response personnel and volunteers.
Heavy rainfall affected 17 districts in Odisha, where officials reported no deaths. Rain associated with the weakening system also reached Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and Sikkim.
A central government team was scheduled to visit Konaseema and West Godavari districts on Friday to assess damage. Andhra Pradesh has requested additional personnel from Telangana to help restore electricity in the Godavari region.
