Three people were killed Thursday when two helicopters collided in midair near McMinnville Municipal Airport southwest of Portland, Oregon, authorities said.
The collision between an Airbus H125 and a Robinson R22 occurred at about 2:15 p.m. near the airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office said emergency crews responded to a crash site in a field southeast of McMinnville, a few miles east of the airport.
Authorities identified two of those killed as 22-year-old flight instructor Maddie Aasbo of Texas and 38-year-old Tyler Delane Sturdevant of Newberg, Oregon. The third person was described as a British student pilot whose name had not been released.
One helicopter belonged to Jerry Trimble Helicopters, an aviation school based at the airport, the school said. The circumstances leading to the collision were not immediately clear.
The crash closed Highway 233 about one mile west of Dayton, along with surrounding local roads. Officials urged the public to avoid the area, and no estimate for reopening the highway was initially available.
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation.
