The National Council of Educational Research and Training has released a 20-hour introductory module on computational thinking and artificial intelligence for students in Classes 9 to 12. Developed in consultation with IIT Madras and IIT Jodhpur, the module is aligned with the National Education Policy 2020 and is designed for students with no prior knowledge of AI.
The activity-based course covers how AI works, how machines learn from examples, the use of AI in everyday applications and the technology’s possibilities and limitations. It also includes exercises on detecting deepfakes and critically verifying AI-generated information.
Students will learn through discussions, practical exercises, experimentation and reflection. NCERT said the activities can be conducted with or without digital devices, allowing schools in varied settings to use the module.
The course places particular emphasis on responsible and safe technology use, including data privacy, misinformation, fairness, digital safety and ethical boundaries around personal information. It presents computational thinking as a systematic approach to solving problems and aims to develop critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills.
NCERT said the module encourages students to become informed and responsible users and evaluators of AI systems rather than accepting their outputs without verification. It also stresses that human judgement, creativity and ethical responsibility remain central to learning.
