Rights holders for Elvis Presley’s music have sued Anthropic, alleging the artificial intelligence company used 274 copyrighted songs without permission to train its models.

The lawsuit, filed Oct. 23 by entities including a unit of Authentic Brands Group, seeks $41 million in compensation, according to Engadget. The disputed works include “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “A Little Less Conversation,” “All Shook Up,” “Return to Sender” and “(You’re the) Devil in Disguise.”

The plaintiffs allege Anthropic infringed their copyrights to build AI technology capable of producing unlicensed derivative works. They also accuse the company of bypassing digital rights management protections and removing or altering copyright-management information from 247 songs.

“The Elvis Plaintiffs are deeply protective of these iconic songs,” lead attorney Richard Busch wrote in the complaint, according to Billboard.

Anthropic told The New York Times that it disagrees with the allegations and intends to defend itself. The company has previously argued that using copyrighted works to train AI models is protected under copyright law’s fair-use doctrine.

Anthropic is also facing separate copyright lawsuits involving music and other creative works. The Presley case was brought by several parties holding interests in the singer’s catalog, including Authentic Brands Group, Raleigh Music Publishing and multiple trusts.
