Sri Lanka coordinated the rescue of 40 Iranian sailors from commercial vessels in international waters off its coast and helped return them to Iran, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Sunday.
The operation followed a request from the Iranian Embassy through diplomatic channels, spokesman Thushara Rodrigo said. The sailors, who were experiencing unspecified medical emergencies, were brought ashore at Galle Harbor, about 126 kilometers from Colombo.
Officials provided medical treatment before the sailors returned to Iran early Sunday. The 40 sailors had been aboard 19 ships, according to the spokesman.
A Sri Lankan government source told Reuters that the country’s navy and coast guard typically assist with humanitarian operations. The Foreign Ministry did not disclose what caused the medical emergencies or identify the vessels. Local media, including The Hindu, reported that the sailors had been aboard U.S.-sanctioned oil tankers, but Sri Lankan officials did not confirm that account.
