Six people were killed after a helicopter carrying five passengers and a pilot crashed near Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Friday, October 30, according to later reports from The Indian Express, Scroll.in and The Hindu.
The Trans Bharat Aviation helicopter, identified by the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority as VT-HCX, took off from Badrinath at about 1:15 p.m. for Sahastradhara in Dehradun. It lost communication and disappeared from the tracking system while flying over the Joshimath valley at around 2:20 p.m.
The Hindu identified the pilot as Capt. Himanshu and the five passengers as Prathapa, Arun, Shankar Gowda, Sudheer K and H.S. Natraja. Initial official reports said the passengers were from Bengaluru.
Teams from the Chamoli district administration, police, State Disaster Response Force, Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police were sent to the area for rescue operations. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said authorities had received reports of a crash near Chai village and that he was monitoring the response.
Adverse weather was reported in the region. The India Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert for Chamoli, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, hail and gusty winds, along with rain and possible snowfall on the Badrinath-Joshimath route. Authorities had not announced the cause of the crash. UCADA grounded Trans Bharat Aviation’s fleet as a precaution.
