Flávio Bolsonaro claims leadership of Brazil after election defeat and flight to US

Brazil’s defeated presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro declared himself the country’s rightful president after arriving in the United States on Wednesday, then deleted the statement and replaced “president” with “leader.”

Bolsonaro alleged without evidence that electoral fraud had deprived him of victory over President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and said he would lead Brazil’s opposition from the United States. Lula won Sunday’s runoff by about 4.4 million votes. Brazil’s electoral authorities, international observers and Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party have recognized the result.

Bolsonaro based his allegation partly on a two-hour extension of voting. The extension had been requested by both campaigns, while Brazil’s electoral authority said the election complied with legal and constitutional requirements. BBC analysis found that roughly 34,000 ballots were cast during the additional period, far fewer than Lula’s winning margin.

The senator left Brazil after failing to obey a Supreme Court order to surrender his passports in connection with a money-laundering investigation. He denies wrongdoing and describes the inquiry as political persecution. He traveled with his wife and daughters through Argentina and Ecuador before landing near Miami on a private jet.

Liberal Party Senate leader Rogério Marinho expressed solidarity with Bolsonaro and called him a political exile, but said there was no evidence supporting his fraud allegation. US President Donald Trump described the election as “very strange” but said he would not become involved in Bolsonaro’s claim.
