Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, extending United’s winless run to nine matches in all competitions and increasing pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
United created several chances in the first half but failed to convert them. Captain Bruno Fernandes, restored to the starting lineup after being dropped for the previous weekend’s 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth, fired over from a Bryan Mbeumo cross. Amad Diallo was twice denied by Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, Mbeumo hit the post and Matheus Cunha had a goal ruled out for offside.
Chelsea took the lead early in the second half when Morgan Rogers carried the ball through United’s defence and lifted his finish over Senne Lammens. Lisandro Martinez was then sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a challenge on Wesley Fofana that also resulted in a penalty. Cole Palmer converted the spot kick despite Lammens getting a hand to the ball.
The defeat left United one point above the relegation zone and at risk of falling into the bottom three after the weekend’s remaining fixtures. Carrick had remained in charge following losses to Bournemouth and Como, but declined to discuss his position after the Chelsea game. “I’m just looking forward to getting the boys ready for midweek,” he said. United are due to host Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday.
