Two Colorado Mountain College students who went missing during a weekend hiking trip in the Rocky Mountains were found dead Wednesday, the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office said.
Kaden Matsuda, 19, of Ridgway, Colorado, and Jackson Donlon, 20, of New York, were located in a basin on West Apostle Mountain, about 100 miles southeast of Aspen. The two left the college’s Leadville campus Friday after telling relatives and friends they planned to climb Ice Mountain, a nearly 14,000-foot peak requiring technical climbing. They were expected back Sunday, and college staff reported them missing Monday morning.
A search involving about 60 volunteers, helicopters, drones and dogs began after a heavy snowstorm struck the area. On Tuesday, a helicopter crew found the students’ tent collapsed under snow near a lake northwest of Ice Mountain. Sleeping bags, clothing and a stove were inside, but their climbing gear was not found in the tent, vehicle or dorm rooms. Authorities said the tent’s location suggested the students may have been attempting West Apostle Mountain instead.
The causes of death remain under investigation, and authorities said foul play is not suspected. Officials were awaiting calmer winds Thursday so a helicopter could retrieve the bodies. Matsuda was studying to become a wildland firefighter, while Donlon was studying to become a mountain guide.
