Putin courts African leaders at Moscow summit

publishers 39articles 65first reported 27 Oct, 09:45 UTCdeveloping since 27 Oct · 6 editions

Russian President Vladimir Putin told African leaders gathered in Moscow on Wednesday that Russia offered a better partnership than Western countries, which he accused of continuing to exploit Africa’s resources and using debt to impede its development.

The remarks came at the third Russia-Africa Summit, a two-day meeting attended by government delegations from 48 African countries, including 22 national leaders. Putin was expected to hold bilateral talks with many of those leaders on trade, security, arms deals and grain supplies.

Putin said Russian companies operate in Africa on an equal footing and promoted Moscow’s support for what it calls a “multipolar world.” Russia has sought to strengthen its economic and political relationships across the continent while facing Western pressure over its war in Ukraine. Some African governments have also turned to Russia for security assistance in recent years.

The Kremlin presented investment and grain supplies among the potential benefits of closer ties. The gathering focused on expanding trade and economic cooperation as well as Russia’s security role in Africa.
