Attacks on commercial shipping around the Strait of Hormuz intensified in October, pushing oil prices higher even as tankers continued moving substantial volumes of crude through the waterway.
More than 30 vessels were hit during the month, according to figures cited by CNBC and The National, roughly double September’s total. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said four tankers caught fire after attacks between Friday and Saturday, while authorities investigated other incidents whose perpetrators had not been identified.
One attack targeted the Panama-flagged tanker *Louise 1* about 46 kilometers northeast of Oman’s Khasab. Maritime security sources told Deutsche Welle that a small boat attached two limpet mines to the hull, causing an engine-room fire. All 27 Indian crew members were safe, the fire was extinguished and no environmental damage was reported, according to Indian and British maritime authorities.
Despite the escalating attacks, Kpler data cited by CNBC showed crude exports through Hormuz averaged nearly 11.1 million barrels a day in October, about 2% below September. Flows fell to 7.3 million barrels a day in the week ending Wednesday, however. Shipping groups said military protection, adapted operations and soaring freight rates had encouraged tanker operators to continue sailing. Brent crude traded above $117 a barrel Friday after rising more than 13% during October.
Separately, oil attributed to earlier tanker attacks reached beaches in Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah, Middle East Eye reported, prompting closures and cleanup operations along parts of the United Arab Emirates coastline.
