Qatari mediators travelled to Tehran on Friday for talks with senior Iranian officials as efforts intensified to revive negotiations between Iran and the United States. Iran’s state news agency IRNA said the delegation, led by a senior adviser to Qatar’s prime minister, discussed bilateral relations and regional developments.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Al Jazeera on Saturday that one of his aides had since travelled to Doha to continue consultations. He described a recent US effort to open dialogue as “a positive step” but said Tehran saw no need to meet US officials at this stage. Qatar and Pakistan have mediated contacts since an April ceasefire.
The diplomatic activity followed a letter from US Vice President JD Vance to Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei. Araghchi said Iranian officials had reviewed the letter, while maintaining that any direct or indirect negotiations depended on Tehran’s conditions being met.
Araghchi said discussions included Iran’s terms for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Those demands include easing sanctions imposed after the Islamabad memorandum, reducing US forces in the region, restoring oil waivers and releasing frozen Iranian funds. He said mediators had also presented proposals concerning Iran’s nuclear programme, which Tehran was reviewing.
The talks come amid fears that fighting could resume in the eight-month conflict. Iran has warned that it remains prepared for further attacks, while US threats to renew military action have continued to overshadow the mediation effort.
