Alaska Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola postponed campaign stops after she and members of her family sustained minor injuries in a car crash Saturday, her campaign said Sunday.
Peltola and her family were traveling to the Alaska Federation of Natives annual banquet when another vehicle struck the one carrying them, according to the campaign. Peltola required medical attention, but campaign manager Cheryl Bruce said the family was “in good spirits.”
Anchorage police said officers responded at about 6:55 p.m. to a multi-vehicle collision near O’Malley Road and Lake Otis Parkway. Peltola’s family and an occupant of a second vehicle were taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, while an occupant of a third vehicle declined medical transport. Police said the circumstances of the collision remain under investigation.
On medical advice, Peltola will reschedule campaign events in Fairbanks and Bethel that had been planned for Sunday and Monday. Her campaign said she expects to resume appearances Tuesday with a stop in Homer.
Peltola, a former U.S. representative, is challenging incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan for Alaska’s Senate seat.
