Marine Le Pen launched her campaign for the French presidency on Sunday at a National Rally gathering in Orléans, promising to “restore the rule of law” if elected next year.

Addressing 8,500 supporters, Le Pen presented her candidacy as “the dawn of a new era” and pledged to protect France’s cultural identity, tighten immigration rules and restore national borders. She also proposed giving French citizens priority for services including public housing and said no international or European authority should supersede the French Constitution.

The campaign launch followed weeks of demonstrations over the cost of living and education, some of which were accompanied by looting, arson and clashes. More than 400,000 people marched in major French cities on Saturday, while police made more than 1,300 arrests, according to RTÉ. Le Pen accused President Emmanuel Macron’s government of lacking authority and used the unrest to support her law-and-order platform.

More than 10,000 people protested against the far right in Orléans as the National Rally conference began, The Irish Times reported, amid a heavy security presence.

Le Pen entered the race despite an appeals court upholding a graft conviction against her. An Ipsos poll cited by The Irish Times put her support at 33.5%, ahead of Jean-Luc Mélenchon at 17%, before voting scheduled to begin in April.
