Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was declared the winner of Brazil’s presidential runoff, securing a fourth nonconsecutive term after defeating Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested election.
With more than 96% of ballots counted, Lula had received more than 51% of the vote, compared with more than 48% for Bolsonaro, NPR reported. Final figures cited by UOL and Al Jazeera put Lula’s margin at more than 4.4 million votes.
Bolsonaro rejected the result and said he would seek to annul the election, calling a last-minute extension of voting hours unacceptable. The Supreme Court had kept eligible polling stations open for an additional two hours after Lula’s campaign complained that reduced public transportation prevented some voters from reaching polling places. Bolsonaro’s campaign also requested an extension, citing heavy rain in regions where he had strong support.
An analysis of electoral court data cited by UOL found that 34,330 votes, about 0.03% of the total, were cast after the original 5 p.m. deadline, far fewer than Lula’s winning margin.
Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party acknowledged the result Monday while saying concerns about the election should be clarified. Bolsonaro had not formally conceded. U.S. President Donald Trump separately said the result “looked” rigged but offered no evidence.
In his victory speech, Lula thanked voters and described the outcome as a defeat for denialism and lies.
