Six people were killed when a Trans Bharat Aviation helicopter flying from Badrinath to Dehradun crashed near Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Friday, October 30.
The helicopter, carrying a pilot and five passengers from Karnataka, took off shortly after 1 p.m. and lost communication and tracking contact over the Joshimath valley at about 2:20 p.m., according to the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority. The victims were identified as pilot Capt. Himanshu and passengers Arun Salunke, Prathapa Bachihally Ningaraju, Sudheer K, Shankargowda V.B. and H.S. Nataraj. Rescue teams recovered all six bodies from remote, high-altitude terrain.
Weather conditions in the region were poor at the time. The India Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert for Chamoli, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, hail and gusty winds, along with rain and possible snowfall in the Badrinath-Joshimath area. Authorities have not announced the cause of the crash.
On Saturday, UCADA said charter helicopters operating on Char Dham pilgrimage routes would be required to carry two pilots beginning November 2. It also ordered pilots to file post-flight reports covering weather and operational conditions, and made prior UCADA approval mandatory for every takeoff and landing. The Hindu reported, citing unnamed sources, that the two-pilot requirement would not apply to Kedarnath services.
Teams from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau reached Joshimath on Saturday to begin investigating the crash. Trans Bharat Aviation’s fleet was grounded as a precaution.
