Three people, including a foreign national, were killed Thursday when a rock spire collapsed near an open-air museum in Turkey’s Cappadocia region, officials said. Five other people were injured.
The collapse occurred at about 3:15 p.m. local time near the entrance and car park of the Göreme Open-Air Museum, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Nevşehir Governor Hüseyin Kök said heavy rain triggered a landslide and rockfall in the area.
Justice Minister Akın Gürlek initially reported two deaths and said rescue crews were searching for other possible victims. Workers later recovered a third body from the rubble, Kök said, bringing the confirmed death toll to three. Two of those killed were Turkish citizens and one was a foreign national.
Emergency crews and excavators searched the site into the night. The governor later said checks and inspections had been completed and teams had withdrawn after determining that no further operations were needed. The area was closed to the public following the collapse.
The chief prosecutor’s office is expected to begin an investigation with expert assessments. Cappadocia is known for its tall, cone-shaped rock formations, commonly called “fairy chimneys,” which were formed by ancient volcanic activity.
