Five people were killed and another injured in a shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati’s Ulubari area on Monday night, October 26, police said. Four victims died at the scene, while Narayan Das, 48, later died at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. The injured man, Satyendra Pathak, 42, was reported to be in stable condition.
Police arrested the suspected gunman, identified as 34-year-old Ghanakanta Gogoi, within an hour and seized a weapon. A Special Investigation Team was constituted Tuesday to conduct what Assam Police described as a thorough and expedited investigation.
According to police, preliminary findings indicate that the shooting followed a dispute between the hotel’s owners and Gogoi, its leaseholder. The parties had scheduled a meeting at the hotel to discuss issues related to the property. Police said an argument escalated into a physical altercation before Gogoi allegedly opened fire on six people.
Officials said the owners had entered a five-year lease agreement with Gogoi in September 2025 for monthly rent of about ₹1.8 lakh, but disagreements later arose over the premises and facilities.
Four of those killed were members of the hotel-owning family: Bhudev Bharali; his sister, Helena Bharali; Helena’s son, Debarshi Kashyap; and her daughter-in-law, Rinika Kashyap. Das, described as a family staff member, was the fifth victim. Police said Gogoi was being questioned and the investigation was continuing.
