Chelsea defeat deepens pressure on Manchester United manager Michael Carrick

Manchester United’s winless run reached nine matches in all competitions after a 2-0 Premier League defeat at Chelsea on Saturday, increasing pressure on manager Michael Carrick.

United created several first-half opportunities but failed to score. Bruno Fernandes, restored to the starting lineup and captaincy after being dropped for the previous weekend’s 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, fired over from a Bryan Mbeumo cross. Amad Diallo was twice denied by Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, while Matheus Cunha had a goal disallowed for offside.

Chelsea took the lead five minutes after halftime when Morgan Rogers drove through United’s defence and lifted his shot over goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Lisandro Martinez was then sent off after receiving two yellow cards in four minutes. His second followed a VAR review of a challenge on Wesley Fofana that also resulted in a penalty, which Cole Palmer converted in the 64th minute.

The defeat left United with one league victory from nine matches and one point above the relegation zone. It followed losses to Bournemouth and Como, who beat United 4-1 in the Champions League.

Carrick, whose position had already been under review before the Chelsea match, did not directly address his future afterward. “I’m just looking forward to getting the boys ready for midweek,” he said. United are scheduled to host Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday.
