New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said President Donald Trump agreed to grant a visa to the mother of Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old Ghanaian student who was fatally shot while walking to school in the Bronx.
Mamdani said on X that he spoke with Trump by phone Saturday and that the president agreed to issue the visa immediately. “Javits Frimpong's mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person,” the mayor wrote. The White House had not publicly confirmed the decision as of Saturday.
Police said Frimpong was shot in the abdomen shortly before 9:30 a.m. Thursday near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont neighborhood. He later died at St. Barnabas Hospital. No arrests have been announced, and investigators have not established a motive.
Frimpong moved from Ghana to New York about a year ago to live with his father, according to U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres. Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said officials in New York were coordinating with local authorities and helping Frimpong’s mother with the visa application process.
A memorial gathering was held in the Bronx on Friday. The type of visa and the mother’s expected travel date have not been announced.
