Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras was named World Series Most Valuable Player after helping the club win its first championship with a 4-1 victory in Game 5.
Contreras batted .381 in the series and delivered a run-scoring double in the clinching game. Behind the plate, he threw out four attempted base stealers and won 10 of 13 appeals during the first World Series played with the Automated Ball-Strike challenge system. He became the eighth catcher to receive the MVP award, joining a list that includes Johnny Bench, Rick Dempsey, Pat Borders and Salvador Perez.
After receiving the trophy, the 28-year-old Venezuelan embraced his older brother, Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras, who won the 2016 World Series with the Chicago Cubs. William called Willson his role model and friend.
Contreras also reflected on representing Venezuela. Earlier in the year, he was part of the Venezuelan team that won the country’s first World Baseball Classic title. Brewers teammates Jackson Chourio and Antonio Senzatela also completed the World Baseball Classic–World Series double.
A three-time All-Star, Contreras hit .270 with 18 home runs and a career-high 94 RBIs during the regular season as Milwaukee won its fourth consecutive National League Central title.
