Supporters of INDIA bloc parties began gathering at New Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday for a Congress-led march and rally demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and opposing the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
The Opposition alliance alleges serious irregularities in voter lists, including wrongful deletions. The rally follows a symbolic “public impeachment” event at which Opposition parties presented allegations against Kumar. The claims have not been established as fact.
The programme includes a march from the Minto Road-Connaught Place junction to Ramlila Maidan, where senior Opposition leaders are expected to address the gathering. Organisers said they expected as many as 10 lakh participants, while Delhi Police estimated attendance at about 50,000. The ground’s capacity is approximately 45,000 to 50,000 when empty and lower when fitted with chairs, enclosures and passageways.
More than 4,000 police personnel, along with Central Armed Police Forces companies, were being deployed around the venue and march route, according to The Hindu. Security arrangements include barricades, controlled entry gates, screening and camera surveillance.
Traffic restrictions and possible diversions were scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. across parts of central Delhi, including roads near Delhi Gate, ITO, Ajmeri Gate and Ramlila Maidan. Police advised railway passengers and other commuters to allow additional travel time.
The BJP also announced a separate march in west Delhi marking the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh violence and criticised Congress for holding its rally on that date.
